Splicing of intron sequence is a pre-mRNA processing step that occurs in the cell nucleus. snRNPs (small nuclear RiboNucleoProteins) are splicing factors made of one or more RNAs associated with proteins. It is now clear that snRNPs are required for intron recognition and splice site selection. The assembly pathway of snRNPs on the pre-mRNA is ordered and results in the formation of a splicing complex or spliceosome. Inside the spliceosome, snRNAs could catalyze the splicing reaction.
